Aspen Lodge was designed to echo Colorado’s heritage, and provide the residents of this 55+ community with a “retreat” building. The concept of a “Colorado Lodge” became the focus, and an important design driver was to emphasize the integration between indoor and outdoor spaces. The main entry incorporates a covered walkway, which creates an outdoor room, with skylights and bench seating. The building axis is aligned for views of prominent peaks along the Front Range. On the west side, the building wraps around featured outdoor amenities, including a recreation pool, two outdoor spas, bocce courts, grass amphitheater, and walking trails along a small lake. Heavy timber trellis structures, stone detailing, and concrete tile roofs in earth tones ground this building in the landscape. Steep roof forms increase the mass of the building, while dormers and stone and trellis detailing, break down the scale. The result is an inviting and memorable community landmark, unique to Colorado.
