Baha Bay at Baha Mar Achieves Historic Fourth Win

In the heart of the Bahamas, Baha Bay at Baha Mar represents a bold reimagining of what a Caribbean water park can be. This isn’t a story about importing a formula and dropping it onto tropical shores. Instead, it’s about creating something authentically Bahamian while pushing the boundaries of design and engineering in one of the world’s most challenging construction environments.

This year marks a remarkable milestone as Baha Bay has secured its fourth consecutive win as the Caribbean’s Leading Water Park in the World Travel Awards!

Engineering the Impossible

Baha Bay’s story begins with three massive hotel towers that once occupied the site. The team faced a seemingly impossible task: implode the towers without damaging adjacent buildings, then then design the park around the hotel foundations that were cost prohibitive to remove.

Rather than viewing this as an obstacle, the design team transformed limitation into opportunity. They developed comprehensive recycling systems to reuse materials on-site, incorporating existing foundations into the new design. What could have been an environmental disaster became a masterclass in adaptive reuse.

Creating a world-class aquatic facility with limited water and power demanded maximum efficiency. The solution incorporated several large underground buildings housing the infrastructure that powers the environments above. These subterranean spaces navigate existing foundations, high water tables, and operational requirements while providing structural support for buildings and water features overhead.

Every material choice balanced effectiveness with limited access to typical construction resources. The team sourced local materials wherever possible while carefully selecting imported elements essential to world-class quality. Building a water park that could be maintained and operated sustainably in an island environment was crucial.

Authenticity Through Design

Walk through Baha Bay and you’re experiencing genuine Bahamian architectural heritage. The design team researched the island’s built traditions—Clapboard cottages, Colonial homes, and vibrant Straw Markets—and wove these influences throughout the facility.

The light, white-and-wood structures of the Beach Club echo traditional coastal cottages. The colorful buildings around Kids Island capture the spirit of bustling Straw Markets. Throughout, you’ll find thoughtful applications of color, materials, and building scale reflecting centuries of Bahamian architectural evolution. The landscape design extends this authenticity beyond buildings. Natural stone textures appear in water features, shell patterns weave into walkways, and infinity pools incorporate natural stone, creating an organic connection to the Caribbean seascape. Most significantly, local artists created custom artwork throughout, ensuring Baha Bay is authentically Bahamian.

Designed for Everyone

Baha Bay serves an extraordinarily diverse audience: guests from three hotel brands, island visitors, and international travelers. The design accommodates couples seeking intimate relaxation, teenagers chasing thrills, young families with toddlers, and everyone in between.

With the region’s inaugural ProSlide WaterCOASTER, pioneering FlyingSAUCER family experiences, and the groundbreaking SkyBOX Drop Capsule system, these cutting-edge features integrate with authentic Bahamian design elements to create something both thrilling and deeply rooted in place.

Eight dining options ensure varied culinary experiences. Separately themed areas cater to different preferences without feeling segmented. The entire facility maintains full accessibility, ensuring all guests can participate regardless of physical ability. This careful balance—creating distinct atmospheres within a cohesive whole—represents sophisticated design thinking that respects the full spectrum of human experience.

Opening Against All Odds

Perhaps the most remarkable chapter in Baha Bay’s story is its completion during the COVID-19 pandemic. When supplier factories closed, ports shut down, and travel stopped, most projects would have halted indefinitely.

Instead, Baha Mar’s ownership pushed through, navigating unprecedented supply chain disruptions and limited workforce mobility. This commitment to creating something exceptional, even facing unprecedented unknowns, speaks to the vision that has established Baha Mar as a premier Caribbean destination. Some projects are built when convenient; landmark projects are built when necessary.

Beyond Expectations

Baha Bay incorporates several industry firsts, in the Caribbean and globally. But perhaps the most important achievement is the integration of world-class resort amenities with genuine cultural authenticity at this scale and quality level.

For the Caribbean tourism industry, Baha Bay represents a new paradigm: destinations that compete globally not by importing standardized experiences, but by creating something that could only exist in that specific place, shaped by that specific culture, responding to that specific environment. The innovation rippling outward from this project is entirely real—a new standard for what’s possible when vision, authenticity, and engineering excellence converge on Caribbean shores.

Baha Bay has been nominated for the World’s Leading Water Park 2025. Vote before October 26!
