Legacy Makers Plaza

DTJ partnered with sculptor, Basil Watson, to provide conceptual design for a tribute to Atlanta majors Ivan Allen Jr. and Maynard Jackson Jr. Trellis-covered seating doubles as a compendium of graphic information about their time in office. Visitors arrive at a grand arc, symbolizing Dr. MLK’s words, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Flanking the arc are sculptures of citizens striving to bend it towards justice. When viewed from the buildings above, it doubles as a bridge over the divide that connects the communities. At the arc’s axial center, the mayors face each other, seeing eye to eye and seeking common ground across the divide, celebrating their shared ideals of integration, advocacy, and commitment to action. Embedded in the resurfaced waterwall, a mosaic portrays contributions of important figures from Atlanta’s history who shared those beliefs, highlighting historically under-represented groups.
